Dispatch 02Bioacoustics and biodiversity

BirdNET + Merlin Bird ID

A mature sensing stack that turns ambient sound into usable species detection for research, monitoring, and everyday field use.

Bird calls become structured data when field audio, model inference, and simple interfaces line up properly.

BirdNET is the deeper infrastructure layer: models listening to continuous audio streams and turning dawn chorus into structured biodiversity data. Merlin Bird ID shows what happens when that capability is packaged into a calm public interface that people actually use in the field.

Together they make a stronger story than either one alone. One side is acoustic classification at research depth. The other is the soft consumer layer that lowers the barrier to observation without flattening the underlying science.

It is a useful Dispatch pattern: serious model work becomes more interesting when it escapes the lab and changes how ordinary people notice the world.
