Vesuvius Challenge
A live race to read damaged archives where the medium itself is the obstacle and the prize is lost literature.
Machine learning is helping recover text from carbonized scrolls without physically opening them.
The Vesuvius Challenge has everything a Dispatch story wants: iconic visuals, hard technical constraints, a public frontier, and a result people can understand instantly. The scroll cannot simply be opened. The recovery has to happen through imaging, inference, and reconstruction.
That makes the challenge feel bigger than a standard computer vision benchmark. The medium matters. Physical damage matters. The target is not classification for its own sake, but the recovery of real text from a ruined archive.
It is one of the best examples in the bank of models touching history directly and doing something a human could not do safely by hand.
